Fall Hair Care Regimen

Hair Care Regimen Natural Hair

It’s Fall time! That means it is the perfect time to reevaluate your hair care regimen. This requires a little different maintenance than the summer months.

Moisture retention

Moisture retention is key in the summer but it is even more important in the fall because of the low levels of moisture in the air. The fall frigid temperatures can dry out your natural hair immediately. Try pre-poling. Pre-pooing is a pre-shampooing treatment done before washing or cowashing. You can apply both coconut oil and conditioner together as a pre-poo treatment or either separate. Let oil/conditioner sit on the hair for 10-30 minutes with a plastic cap. Then continue with your normal hair care regimen. There are many treatments that can be used before your wash including, my GO bananas treatment here.

Clarifying

Clarifying is a must during this time because of the wear/tear, and stress we have put on our strands through swimming, sweating, and styling. If you’re like me and do not use shampoo during the summer, well now is the time to break out that cleanser. I use a homemade cleanser with bentonite clay being the main ingredient.

Protective styles

Protective styles are a must in the fall/winter seasons. It’s so simple to put your hair in two-strand twists updos, etc. This is the best option to retain length during these colder months. Keeping your hands out of your hair will equate to growth. And when you are not feeling your hair, let beanies, hats, and more beanies be your best friend. Make sure each are lined with satin so that breakage does not occur.

Hair steamers

This is another way you can retain moisture because it opens the cuticles of your scalp, whichs allows the moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. I have invested Q-Redew it has changed my hair care regimen forever.  If your pockets are not ready for this purchase that’s ok. There is another option. Simply continue your regimen as normal, then letting the steam from the shower penetrate your strands, and finally grabbing plastic caps to place over your hair. This a inexpensive option, that works! You can even put the plastic caps on right after you wash, and put a towel over the plastic caps.

Deep Conditioning

Deep Conditioning is one of the most important parts of your fall regimen. Deep condition any and every chance you get. It does not matter how often you are doing it because during the fall your hair will thank you. The longer you keep your choice of deep conditioner in your hair the better! I usually keep treatments in for an hour or even overnight.

Trimming

Trimming is essential in maintaining healthy hair. Now if you have not trimmed your hair in a while, it would be a good idea to trim your split ends at the start of this season. Please continue to look for split ends during the coming weeks/months. Do not hold on to any split ends because more breakage will be caused and the moisture that you retained will not be worth it.

Have fun with your hairstyles this season! Change it all up, and learn how to get that moisture back without trying!
