Hair Goals: How to achieve shiny hair

Shiny Hair

I love when my natural hair shines. Shiny natural hair can seem impossible to achieve when trying to figure out what products to use as well as battling frizz. There are oils and other products that are said to give your hair shine but if you want that natural shine stay tuned.

Conditioners

Conditioning your natural hair on a weekly basis is a must to achieve shiny healthy hair. Make sure you are conditioning your hair as much as possible. Whatever conditioner you are using make sure it is sulfate free and can give you the moisture that your strands require. “Cowashing” is a method of using only conditioner to cleanse the hair. This method works great during the week and in between regular washing. Using conditioner will give you your hair that natural shine without leaving it feeling dry and dull.

Less heat

Using less heat seems pretty obvious. But it can be hard to put down those flat irons or blow dryers when wanting a certain style. If you are diffusing your hair make sure you are using the low heat setting and the cool shot button. When flat ironing it is important to use the lowest setting as well as a heat protectant. Too much heat can cause lifetime of damage the hair, which dulls the shine. Make sure to deep conditioning thoroughly after applying any heat.

Drinking water

This too seems pretty obvious, right? We’ve heard for years drink 6 glasses of water a day. I’m not saying drink 6 glasses (although that’s great), drink enough so you are not dehydrated, which then leaves your hair the same way.  Many naturals do not drink enough water, which can benefit hair growth. Lack of water results in breakage, dull, and thinning hair. The more water you drink the more it will benefit the health & shine of your natural hair. Drink up!

Rinsing with cold water

Once you have completed your hair care regimen. At the end, try rinsing out with cold water. Why? Cold water shocks the cuticles of your scalp, which in turn lays the hair down. This can be uncomfortable at first, but trust me once you put this in your regimen you will see how shiny your hair can get.

Let me know! Have you tried any of these methods?

All great suggestions! My hair looks its best when I use a sulfate-free shampoo or mud wash, and deep condition weekly with a hair steamer. But any kind of deep conditioning helps.
