5 steps for maintaining protective styles

Me protective style 2

Protective styles are so fun! Especially during the Summer for vacation. Many people believe that once a protective style is in, that’s it. It can be very confusing since protective styling is considered “low maintenance” but doesn’t mean your normal regimen goes out the door.

Here are 5 ways to keep that protective style cute:

Protecting your hair

Bonnet

Just because you have a protective style does not mean to let go of your satin bonnet or pillow. If anything you want to make sure that you do not forget to put it on every night. A satin bonnet will keep your protective style looking and feeling fresh.

Grab your spray bottle

Don’t forget about your roots! Moisture is still needed whether protective styling are not. Make sure you spritz a little water on your roots at night before putting your bonnet on.

Here’s a trick: If you have an itchy scalp, try adding a little of your favorite conditioner to the water.

Washing your protective style

Listen, just because most protective styles use faux hair doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash it. Just like your natural hair, added hair can become smelly from sweat, dirt, or debris from the outside elements. If you don’t want to jump in the shower try dry shampoo. Wash hair at least every 2 weeks.

 Avoid over-styling

Up dos are fun! However, try to avoid over styling with up dos because it will pull at your edges putting strain and causing breakage. Be gentle with your hairline while putting your protective style in and while maintaining it.

Take them out

This is pretty obvious because protective styles aren’t your actual hair. So take them out. Also, do not leave whatever style in for too long. Keep the protective style in for no longer than 4 weeks (a month) the maximum would be 2 months. Do not go longer than that because damage can occur to your natural hair.

Hope these steps were helpful! Let me know in the comments if you have any other ideas.
