Lazy Natural: The Pros & Cons

Lazy Natural

Lazy Natural

Some people say that natural hair is a lot of work! With shampooing, conditioning, deep conditioning, hot oil treatments, protein treatments, etc, your hair schedule can get out of control! Don’t forget about detangling, styling, and moisturizing. Sigh! I can’t keep up sometimes. But being a lazy natural can definitely be great for minimizing hair damage including breakage and split ends, although it still has its pros and cons.

Pros

Less manipulation/ Low maintenance

Braids, havana twists, marley twists, mini twists, two-strand twists, all of these are considered low maintenance hairstyles. These protective styles become a lazy naturals go-to because of the little to no time it takes. These styles let your hair take a “mini-vacation” from the damage that would be caused from over manipulation.

Less time in your hair more time fun

The less time spent styling and washing means more time can be spent on other activities. Such as housework, lunch with friends, and catching up on your favorite tv shows.

Anticipation of growth/length

The more time your hair spends in protective styles the more time there is to see growth/length by taking a break! This will be a new start to new hair growth. When taking protective styles out, watch the length your hair has retained

Cons

Prolonging Wash Day

Too many times lazy naturals say they will wash their hair tomorrow and tomorrow becomes a week, another month, etc. This is a no-no! Think ahead by having a schedule of when you’re going to take the protective style out, as well as when wash day is going to occur.

Over-manipulation after protective style

Now that the protective style has been a while, its time to take it out. Now you’re are rushing! STOP. Go slowly when taking any protective style out. The detangling process is a just that a process, so make sure you are not causing any extra breakage. Go back to your normal hair care regimen i.e LOC method.

Lack of care while wearing protective styles

Naturalistas please, do not forget that your natural hair needs TLC (Tender, Loving, Care) while in twists, etc. TLC sometimes means nightly moisture, and sealing with an oil. We can’t forget that under protective styles that we still have our hair to take care of.

Being a lazy natural can be great especially if you are busy working, etc.
